Search “tour” on Instagram, and the visible grid of the Explore page fills instantaneously with pix. Depending on when your appearance, they could show vibrant landscapes or, broadly speaking, selfies. Most regularly, I might say that the grid lacks cultural connections, local people, and private revelations that outline tours. So when Instagram created a shorthand with tabs on their Explore page and positioned journey at the pinnacle, they also immediately have become the arena’s maximum effective tour editor, defining for one billion users what it approaches tour.
Lately, I discover myself asking over and over, which is the actual tour in “tour” pictures on Instagram? And where are the tourists? Where are the actual humans within the perfectly centered and brightened photos? Where is the respect for the locals and the environment? These photos largely lack the soul of the journey: the feeling of transporting oneself somewhere new, if most effective for some days, and the visible info that may so powerfully monitor the smells and sounds of an area.
If you’re wondering why my views on journey and Instagram are so robust, it’s because I’m a photographer and the founding father of the travel and way of life e-book Tiny Atlas (@tinyatlasquarterly).
